Gord Dineen has been named the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Derek King was also named an associate coach with the AHL team.

A veteran of more than 500 NHL games as a player, Dineen spent the past five seasons as an assistant with the Marlies. During that span, the team went 202-139-17-30 and won the North Division three times. The Marlies finished first in the division last season with 96 points before being eliminated in seven games in the Western Conference final by the eventual Calder Cup champions, the Texas Stars.

Dineen, 51, succeeds Steve Spott, who the Maple Leafs hired as an assistant coach on July 11.

Like Dineen, King has served on the Marlies staff for the past five seasons and spent several years playing in the NHL. After playing more than 800 games in the League, King started his coaching career as a player/coach with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins in 2002. In 830 NHL games with the New York Islanders, Hartford Whalers, Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues, King scored 261 goals and 612 points.

Quote of the Day

There's no discouragement in that room. There's no issues there at all to be honest with you. It's more about, 'Hey, it's opportunities for players.' And if we become that bad of a team because of one player, it's not a real good sign for our hockey club. So this is part of sports. It's part of hockey.
