Right wing Justin Shugg agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team announced Monday. Shugg will make $600,000 in the NHL or $70,000 in the American Hockey League this season.

Shugg, 22, completed his third professional season in 2013-14 with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. The Niagara Falls, Ontario, native established AHL career highs in games played (75), goals (16), assists (22) and points (38), and was tied for fourth on the Checkers in goals.

Selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round (No. 105) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Shugg has 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists) in 147 AHL games. He played in 15 regular-season and 11 playoff games with Florida of the ECHL, and helped the Everblades win their first Kelly Cup in 2012.

Prior to turning pro, Shugg spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Oshawa, Windsor and St. Michael's. He helped Windsor win back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 2009 and 2010, and reached the Memorial Cup championship game with St. Michael's in 2011.

Quote of the Day

I've never seen anything like that. The great thing is I don't know how many times guys bailed me out where they had to score to keep it alive and they did every time. It was amazing. It's not the way we draw it up, to go 20 rounds here, but obviously it's a big win.
