Capitals re-sign defenseman Nate Schmidt

Defenseman Nate Schmidt signed a one-year, two-way contract to remain with the Washington Capitals, the team announced Sunday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Schmidt, 22, had six points (two goals, four assists), six penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating in 29 games with the Capitals last season. Schmidt appeared in 38 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League last season and had 13 points (two goals, 11 assists).

In 96 games at the University of Minnesota, Schmidt had 74 points (12 goals, 62 assists) as a two-time all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association defenseman.
