Sharks sign defensemen Hannan, Tennyson
The San Jose Sharks have signed defensemen Scott Hannan and Matt Tennyson, and forwards Micheal Haley and Bryan Lerg

Scott Hannan signed a one-year contract to return to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Financial terms were not released.

"Scott is a high-character, veteran player who leads by example," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He understands and accepts his role based on the needs of our team and will be a great mentor for many of the younger players on our roster."

Hannan, 35, had three goals and nine assists in 56 games while averaging 17:46 of ice time per game last season. He had two assists in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Sharks with the 23rd pick of the 1997 NHL Draft, Hannan has 210 points in 997 games with the Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators.

The Sharks also signed defenseman Matt Tennyson to a two-year contract and forwards Micheal Haley and Bryan Lerg each to one-year contracts. Financial terms were not released.

Tennyson, 24, was a restricted free agent who had seven goals and 14 assists in 54 games with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League last season.

He played in the NHL in 2012-13, with two assists and a plus-2 rating in four games.

"Matt is a young, puck-moving defenseman with the vision to create offense from the back end," Wilson said. "We are excited to watch him progress as we continue the process of committing to the younger players in our organization."

Haley, 28, had seven goals, 11 assists and 131 penalty minutes with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League last season.

"Micheal plays with an edge and competes hard on every shift," Wilson said. "His hard-working, physical game brings a different dimension that teams have to account for, and he is a great teammate that will mesh well with our organization."

Haley last played in the NHL during the 2012-13 season with the New York Rangers. In 52 games with the New York Islanders and Rangers, Haley has two goals, three points and 163 penalty minutes

Lerg, 28, was captain of the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League last season. He had 12 goals and 15 assists in 35 games.

"Bryan plays the game with energy and can chip in both offensively and on the forecheck," Wilson said. "He is a solid character guy and we are excited to add him to the organization."

Quote of the Day

It's very special, obviously; there is draft day and then there's the day that you sign your first deal. It's been a crazy couple of weeks and I'm very honored to be able to do that."
