Forward Trevor Smith signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, and defenseman Rinat Valiev signed a three-year entry-level contract. Financial details were not revealed.
Smith, 29, played 28 games with the Maple Leafs last season, scoring four goals and nine points in 28 games. The University of New Hampshire product was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Islanders in 2007. He has scored seven goals and 15 points with eight penalty minutes and a minus-4 rating in 52 NHL games with the Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and Maple Leafs.
Valiev was Toronto's third-round pick (No. 68) in the 2014 NHL Draft on June 28. The Russian played last season with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League, and had five goals and 28 points in 55 regular-season games before scoring a goal and nine points in 13 playoff games.
