Toronto Maple Leafs sign forward Petri Kontiola to one-year contract

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Petri Kontiola to a one-year contract Thursday.

The 29-year-old centre has spent the last five seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. He was drafted by Chicago in the seventh round (196th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The Finnish centre had five assists in 12 games for the Blackhawks in the 2007-'08 season. He spent most of that campaign with the team's AHL affiliate.

Kontiola helped Finland win a bronze medal at the Sochi Olympics.

Quote of the Day

I would definitely love to play with him. He's a skilled player and over the years he definitely has shown that he can score a lot of goals. I think it would work out well.
