Gleason signs one-year contract with Hurricanes
Free agent defenseman Tim Gleason signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes

Unrestricted free agent defenseman Tim Gleason agreed to terms with the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year, $1.2 million contract Thursday.

The Hurricanes also agreed to terms with defensemen Jared Staal and Michal Jordan on one-year, two-way contracts.

Gleason spent part of eight seasons with the Hurricanes before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 1 for defenseman John-Michael Liles. The Maple Leafs bought out the final two years of Gleason's contract earlier this week.

"We obviously know well what Tim brings to our team on and off the ice and how he fits in our organization," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. "We are happy that he is choosing to return to Raleigh."

Gleason had one goal and five points in 39 games for the Maple Leafs after having one assist in 17 games with the Hurricanes last season.

"With [Francis] being the new GM and having a new coaching staff, it's a fresh start for everybody," Gleason said. "It's a good opportunity for me. My family loves it there, and there's not a better place to be and play. I'm excited to be back and have the opportunity to get back at it."

Gleason was the 23rd pick of the 2001 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators and made his NHL debut with the Los Angeles Kings during the 2003-04 season. He has 16 goals and 133 points in 655 regular-season games for the Kings, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs. He had one goal and five points in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2009, when Carolina went to the Eastern Conference Final.

Staal, 23, will make $550,000 at the NHL level, or $65,000 at the American Hockey League level. He had two goals and seven points in 50 games last season for the AHL Charlotte Checkers.

Jordan, 23, will make $550,000 at the NHL level, or $200,000 at the AHL level, with a guarantee of $225,000. He led Checkers defensemen last season with 21 assists and had 25 points.
