The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday hired former Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell as president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment.

The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday hired former Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell as president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment.

"Don is a very experienced and well-respected hockey executive," owner and CEO Peter Karmanos Jr. said in a statement. "He will bring a fresh approach to the business side of the Carolina Hurricanes."

Waddell, 55, comes to Carolina after spending the last three seasons as a professional scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Prior to joining the Penguins in January 2012, Waddell was GM of the Thrashers from the team's founding in 1998, until 2010, when he took the role of team president. He also served as interim coach on two occasions.

Waddell also served as executive vice president and co-chair of the executive committee of the Atlanta Spirit, the parent company of the Thrashers, the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena. He was an assistant GM for the Detroit Red Wings' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1997-98.

A native of Detroit, Waddell has served in several capacities with USA Hockey during the past five decades, including as GM for United States' teams at the 2006 Torino Olympics, and the 2001, 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Championship. As a player, he helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 1983 World Championship.
