Maple Leafs prepare to buy out Gleason: reports
The Maple Leafs placed defenseman Tim Gleason on waivers Monday with the intent to buy out the remaining two years of his his four-year contract, according to multiple reports.

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Tim Gleason on waivers Monday with the intent to buy out the remaining two years on his contract, according to multiple media reports.

Gleason, 31, has two more years remaining at an average annual value of $4 million on a four-year contract he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes.

This is not a compliance buyout; Toronto already used the two allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement on defenseman Mike Komisarek and forward Mikhail Grabovski following the 2012-13 season.

The Maple Leafs acquired Gleason from the Hurricanes on Jan. 1, 2014, for defenseman John-Michael Liles. Gleason had one goal and six points in 56 total games last season with the two teams.

Gleason was the 23rd pick in the 2001 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators and has career totals of 16 goals and 133 points in 655 games with the Los Angeles Kings, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs. He has one goal and five points in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all played during the Hurricanes' run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2009.
