Here is a look at the first-round selections in the 2014 NHL Draft, picked Friday at Wells Fargo Center.

1.   Aaron Ekblad, D, Barrie Colts (OHL)

The defenseman of the year in the OHL had 23 goals, 53 points and 91 penalty minutes in his third season with the Colts. The 6-foot-3, 216-pound right shot will join a strong young group of blueliners, including Mike Matheson, Ian McCoshen and Alex Petrovic. Ekblad was the first defenseman drafted No. 1 in eight years.

2.   Sam Reinhart, C, Kootenay Ice (WHL)

From a family of a hockey-playing father and three brothers, the youngest finished fourth in the Western Hockey League with 105 points (36 goals, 69 assists) in 60 regular-season games. He has 101 goals, 254 points and a plus-52 rating in 203 regular-season games spanning three seasons.

3.   Leon Draisaitl, C, Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)

Projected as a Jaromir Jagr-type performer, the 6-foot-1, 204-pound left shot had 38 goals and 105 points in 64 games. The Oilers needed to add a workhorse forward to skate alongside Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov.

4.   Samuel Bennett, C, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)

Bennett, who had 36 goals, 91 points and 118 PIM in 57 games, was named the top prospect in the Canadian Hockey League. General manager Brad Treliving needed another forward with a combination of skill, speed and tenacity.

5.   Michael Dal Colle, LW, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Dal Colle is a two-way game-breaker, skilled and physical. He's the first player in on the forecheck and a good playmaker with a high-end skill set. Dal Colle finished with 39 goals and 95 points in 67 games and is from the same cloth as Islanders captain John Tavares, who spent four seasons with the Generals.

6.   Jake Virtanen, RW, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

He is a skilled power forward with good balance and can reach a high gear with his outside speed. Virtanen, who had 45 goals, 71 points and 100 penalty minutes, enjoys a physical brand of hockey and is willing to pay the price in the slot. He joins a solid group of forward prospects with Bo Horvat, Brendan Gaunce and Hunter Shinkaruk.

7.   Haydn Fleury, D, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Fleury plays a solid two-way game and can use his speed at both ends. He's proven to be a good presence defending with his 6-2, 198-pound frame, something GM Ron Francis needed on the back end. Fleury, who had eight goals and 46 points in 70 games, can play physical and earns big minutes.

8.   William Nylander, C/W, Modo (SWE)

The son of former NHL player Michael Nylander is a mobile skater with outstanding hands, vision, puck-handling skills and shot. He's considered a sniper capable of setting up scoring chances from the outside or in traffic and is very effective on the power play. He had one goal and seven points in 22 games with Modo.

9.   Nikolaj Ehlers, LW, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

The Danish prospect had 49 goals and 104 points as a rookie in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and was the most improved from the start of the season to the end. He's an excellent skater with NHL speed, good hands and a great shot.

10. (from Ottawa)  Nicholas Ritchie, LW, Peterborough Petes (OHL)

Ritchie had 39 goals, 74 points and 136 penalty minutes in 61 games. He will eventually fill a role as that prototypical power forward in the Ducks lineup. His brother, Brett Ritchie, was a second-round pick (No. 44) of the Dallas Stars in 2011.

11.   Kevin Fiala, LW, HV 71 Jr. (SWE)

The explosive, 5-10, 180-pound left-handed shooting Swiss forward has great puck-handling skills and speed. He had 10 goals, 25 points in 27 games with HV 71's junior team, and 11 points in 17 games in the Swedish Hockey League.

12.   Brendan Perlini, LW, Niagara (OHL)

The 6-2, 226-pound power forward was voted the most improved player in the Eastern Conference of the OHL. He has high-end puck skills and an NHL-caliber shot, and finished with 34 goals, 71 points in 58  games.

13.   Jakub Vrana, LW/RW, Linkoping (SWE)

The Czech Republic native is a great puck distributor with good vision. Vrana played youth hockey with HC Letnany in the Czech Republic before making the move to Sweden to join Linkoping. He finished with 14 goals, 25 points and 26 PIM in 24 games with Linkoping's junior team. He's not flashy but reliable and a creative playmaker.

14.   Julius Honka, D, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Honka played a key role for Finland at the 2014 World Junior Championship and excelled in his first North American season in Swift Current with 16 goals and 56 points in 62 games. He could be a good complement alongside Stars defense prospect Jamie Oleksiak.

15.   Dylan Larkin, C, U.S. National Team Development Program (USHL)

Larkin, committed to the University of Michigan, is considered a strong skater with great closing speed. He uses his body well along the boards and isn't afraid to play a physical game to generate turnovers. He will fit the Red Wings system well as a solid two-way player; had 29 goals, 49 points, 52 PIM in 53 games.

16.   Sonny Milano, LW, U.S. National Team Development Program (USHL)

Milano joins a solid corps of young forwards, including Alexander Wennberg, Marko Dano and Kerby Rychel. Milano is good with the puck in traffic and in open ice. He enjoys the role of agitator and finished with 24 goals, 72 points and eight power-play goals in 50 games.

17.   Travis Sanheim, D, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

The 6-3, 181-pound blueliner moved 114 spots from No. 167 on NHL Central Scouting's midterm rankings to No. 53 in the final rankings in April. He had five goals and 29 points in his rookie season in the WHL. He had six assists to lead all defenders for Canada at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship en route to a bronze medal.

18.   Alex Tuch, RW, U.S. National Team Development Program (USHL)

The 6-4, 213-pound Boston College-bound power forward has good hands, vision and hockey IQ. He was NHL Central Scouting's highest-rated American player after producing 28 goals and 60 points in 53 games. The Wild could use a big body in their lineup and Tuch will provide that in the future.

19.   Anthony DeAngelo, D, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman was seeking a game-changer along the blue line and he got just that with offensively charged DeAngelo. He led OHL defensemen with 56 assists and 71 points in 51 games.

20. (from San Jose)  Nick Schmaltz, C, Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)

The University of North Dakota recruit can skate with the puck at full speed and make big plays. The brother of St. Louis Blues prospect Jordan Schmaltz had 18 goals, 63 points, 10 power-play goals and four game-winning goals in 53 games. Will become a future fixture down the middle for Chicago.

21.   Robert Fabbri, C, Guelph (OHL)

The left-hander is an excellent playmaker and puck handler. He consistently contributed on the power-play and is elusive and quick. He had 45 goals and 87 points in 58 regular-season games and was named MVP of the 2014 OHL playoffs after getting 28 points (13 goals) in 16 games.

22.   Kasperi Kapanen, RW, KalPa (FIN)

Son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen can play center or wing. He is smooth, fast and tricky with the puck. The Penguins are in need of point-producing wings, and Kapanen proved himself in the Liiga.

23.   Conner Bleackley, C, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Bleackley finished 2013-14 tied for the team lead with 29 goals and was tops with 68 points in 71 games. The 6-foot, 197-pound right shot, plays a spirited game.

24. (from Anaheim)  Jared McCann, C, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)

McCann is a playmaking center with a deceptive shot and good scoring touch. He was excellent on faceoffs and finished second on the Greyhounds in goals (27) and points (62). He scored the game-winning goal for Team Orr against Team Cherry at the 2014 Top Prospects Game.

25.   David Pastrnak, RW, Sodertalje (SWE)

The Czech Republic native is a flashy, entertaining and effective penalty killer. At 6-foot, 167 pounds, he was able to use his speed and puck-handling to create chances for himself and teammates. He was an assistant captain with silver medal-winning Czech Republic at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship.

26.   Nikita Scherbak, RW, Saskatoon Blades (WHL)

The first Russian drafted led rookie scorers in the WHL with 78 points (28 goals) in 65 games. Scherbak is good at driving to the net and creating chances. He's got a quick release and can finish, is very unselfish and uses his linemates well.

27. (from Chicago)  Nikolay Goldobin, RW, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

The second Russian selected has a strong, effortless stride and is a good puck-handler and playmaker. The 5-11, 178-pound left-handed shot finished sixth in the OHL with 94 points in 67 games. He had a 22-game point streak, producing 21 goals and 22 assists from Nov. 14, 2013, to Jan. 11, 2014.

28. (from Tampa Bay)  Joshua Ho-Sang, C/RW, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

The Islanders opted for a high-energy forward with great speed, quickness and craftiness with their second pick of the first round. Ho-Sang has the capability of making plays at top speed, leading Windsor with 85 points in 67 regular-season games.

29.   Adrian Kempe, LW, Modo (SWE)

The Stanley Cup champions went for a strong, versatile forward capable of playing center or wing. He's a projected power forward and enjoys driving to the net. The 6-1, 187-pound player had five goals and 11 points in 45 games for Modo's senior team in the Swedish Hockey League.

30.   John Quenneville, C, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

The Devils could use a consistent point-producer in their system and the 6-foot, 182-pound second cousin to Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville fits the bill. He had a tremendous second half of the season and finished with 25 goals and 58 points in 61 games. He has a pro makeup and tremendous work ethic, two traits required of a player performing for Devils GM Lou Lamoriello.
