Los Angeles Kings re-sign D Matt Greene to a new 4-year contract after strong post-season

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Defenceman Matt Greene has agreed to a new four-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Stanley Cup champions announced the deal with Greene on Tuesday night.

Greene was limited to 38 games in the regular season, but the assistant captain returned to the lineup in the post-season and played in 20 games while the Kings won their second NHL title in three years.

A physical, stay-at-home defenceman who has been with Los Angeles since 2008, Greene struggled with injuries in the past two years. He has 69 points and 582 penalty minutes in 504 career games with the Kings and Edmonton.

Greene's return leaves forward Marian Gaborik and defenceman Willie Mitchell as the champs' only unrestricted free agents. Los Angeles is pursuing a new deal with Gaborik.

Quote of the Day

Philadelphia is where I started my NHL career and this is where I want to be so I am really happy. This definitely gives me a lot of confidence by the Flyers showing that they have confidence in me. I know they want to see me get better as a player and this is the place to do it.

— Zac Rinaldo to the Flyers website on signing a two-year contract extension with Philadelphia
