New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow is looking to trade the rights to defenseman Dan Boyle after not yet signing the pending unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.
TSN's Darren Dreger reports Boyle is intrigued by the Islanders' offer but remains undecided. He is committed to signing a two-year contract.
"I don’t know if we’ll get anything done, but we'll see what's out there," Snow told ESPN.com Wednesday. "We've talked to a couple of teams, we'll see if anything comes to fruition here."
Boyle's rights were acquired by the Islanders from the San Jose Sharks on June 5 for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, which would turn into a 2015 fourth-round pick if the Islanders are able to agree to terms with the 37-year-old defenseman prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. He can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Boyle is the Sharks' all-time leader in goals (68), assists (201) and points (269) by a defenseman, and his 431 games are seventh. He had 12 goals and 36 points in 75 games this season and four assists in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.
In 15 NHL seasons with the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Sharks, Boyle has 144 goals and 561 points in 954 games. He's fourth among active defensemen in goals and points.
Snow also told LeBrun that the Islanders are unlikely to bring back veteran goalie Evgeni Nabokov to back up Jaroslav Halak. Nabokov went 15-14-8 with a 2.74 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in 40 games in 2013-14, and is 57-43-18 with a 2.59 GAA and .910 save percentage in three seasons with New York.
"We couldn't come to an agreement; it looks like he's headed to July 1," Snow said.
