Tootoo had one year remaining on a three-year, $5.7 million contract he signed July 1, 2012.
The 31-year-old spent most of this past season with the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, scoring six goals and finishing with 18 points in 51 games. He had no goals and one assist in 11 games with Detroit.
Tootoo spent the first eight seasons of his NHL career with the Nashville Predators organization. He holds the Predators career record for penalty minutes with 725 in 486 games.
It's the second of the two compliance buyouts the Red Wings are allowed under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. They used the first one last summer on defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo, who appeared in 25 games with the St. Louis Blues in 2013-14.
Detroit general manager Ken Holland also confirmed to the Macomb Daily that forwards Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson won't be back next season. Bertuzzi, 39, had nine goals, seven assists and was minus-17 in 59 games this season, his fifth with Detroit. Samuelsson, 37, had one goal and three assists in 31 games over the past two seasons in his second stint with the Red Wings, for whom he played from 2006-09.
