Cup-winner was longest game in Kings history
The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup for the second time in three seasons Friday with a 3-2 victory in double overtime in the longest game in franchise history.

The longest game in Los Angeles Kings history produced the sweetest reward.

Alec Martinez's goal 14:43 into the second overtime Friday gave the Kings a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, wrapping up their second championship in three seasons. It also ended the longest game in franchise history.

The Kings' previous longest game came last spring, when they were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on a goal by Patrick Kane at 11:40 of the second overtime.

Los Angeles became the 17th team to win the Cup in overtime and first since the Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6 of the 2010 Cup Final. The Kings are the first home team to win the Cup in OT since the 1980 New York Islanders, who beat the Flyers on a goal by Bob Nystrom to start a run of four consecutive championships.

The Kings went 3-0 in overtime against the Rangers in the series. It was the second season in a row that there were three overtime games played in the Final. Chicago won two of three OT games against the Boston Bruins last spring. The only Final with more overtime games was in 1951, when the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens in five games, all of which went past regulation.

Friday marked the 26th overtime game this spring, two short of the record of 28 set in 1993. It was the 93rd game of this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs, the most ever.
