Travis Morin and Scott Glennie scored twice and Chris Mueller and Mike Hedden also scored to lead the Texas Stars to a 6-3 win against the St. John's IceCaps in Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals at Cedar Park Center on Sunday night.
Game 2 is set for Monday in Texas (8:30 p.m. ET; NHLN-US), the American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars.
After O'Neill's goal tied the game 1:47 into the second period, Mueller gave Texas a 2-1 lead 2:05 later, when he took a pass from Dustin Jeffrey (three assists) and fired a wrister from the right circle past Hutchinson for his sixth goal of the playoffs.
Mueller finished with three points and was plus-4.
Glennie scored his fifth goal of the playoffs at 12:17 of the second, when he took a cross-ice feed from Jeffrey and ripped a shot from the slot past Hutchinson to make it 3-1.
Morin scored his second of the game with 3:09 left in the second period. With Glennie in the box for holding the stick, Morin took Brendan Ranford's nifty feed from behind the net and beat Hutchinson for a shorthanded goal, the first allowed by St. John's this postseason.
Morin also scored a power-play goal 3:08 into the opening period.
Stars goalie Cristopher Nilstorp stopped 11 of 12 shots in the second. He finished with 25 saves in the victory.
St. John's, the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets, cut the deficit in half when Mouillierat scored 2:36 into the third. With the teams at even strength, Brenden Kichton made a nice move in the slot and backhanded a shot that Nilstorp denied, but Mouillierat collected the rebound and shot it past the Stars goaltender to make it 4-2.
Glennie scored his second goal of the game 9:13 into the third, but St. John's got back within two when Hill's slap shot found its way past Nilstorp 51 seconds later.
Hedden iced the win for Texas with an empty-net goal at 18:19.
The Stars improved to 6-0 in the playoffs when leading after 40 minutes. St. John's went 0-for-4 on the power play.
