NBC's McGuire candidate for Penguins GM job
NBC Sports analyst Pierre McGuire told a Toronto radio station that he is a candidate for the general manager's job with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

NBC Sports hockey analyst Pierre McGuire confirmed during a conference call Tuesday that he is a candidate for the open general manager job with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"I met with the Pittsburgh Penguins," McGuire said. "I talked with the Pittsburgh Penguins. So have a lot of other people."

McGuire has a history with the Penguins, serving as a scout in 1990 and as an assistant coach under Scotty Bowman when Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup back-to-back in 1991 and 1992.

The Penguins fired Ray Shero last month after they were eliminated by the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Pittsburgh led the best-of-7 series 3-1 before losing the next three games, including Game 7 at Consol Energy Center.

Coach Dan Bylsma was retained with management stating his status would be evaluated by whoever was hired as the GM.

McGuire, 52, is one of at least five candidates being considered for the job, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Those believed to have received interest or who have been interviewed include Tampa Bay Lightning assistant general manager Julien BriseBois, Nashville Predators assistant GM Paul Fenton and Penguins assistant to the general manager Tom Fitzgerald. ESPN.com reported that Carolina Hurricanes president and former GM Jim Rutherford has interviewed for the position.

Jason Botterill, who was promoted from assistant GM to interim GM when Shero was fired, is the only one publicly identified by the organization as a candidate for the full-time position.
