Hutchinson, IceCaps blank Penguins in Game 6 to advance to Calder Cup final

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Michael Hutchinson made 34 saves as the St. John's IceCaps routed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-0 on Tuesday to advance to the American Hockey League Calder Cup final.

Eric O'Dell, Blair Riley, Adam Lowry, Jason Jaffray and Zach Redmond scored for St. John's, who won the Eastern Conference series 4-2.

The IceCaps opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 17:53 of the first period. O'Dell tipped a shot from Brenden Kichton in over the blocker of Penguins goalie Peter Mannino.

Lowry doubled the IceCaps lead 3:24 into the second period, tapping in a Josh Morrissey feed that found the forward in front of net.

Riley tipped a point shot five-hole to extend the IceCaps lead to three at the 2:23 mark of the third period.

Redmond scored a fourth for St. John's with a wrist shot from the point while Jaffray screened Mannino at 5:21.

Jaffray added an empty-net goal with 47.5 seconds left.

Mannino saved 25 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

St. John's will play the winner of the Western Conference final between the Toronto Marlies and Texas Stars for the AHL championship.

Quote of the Day

I'm just excited about the opportunity. I've been on the ice earlier than usual and in the weight room, pushing around a little more weights than usual. Every day I go into a workout with a smile on my face and ready to go. When you do have a little more responsibility, you want to take your lunch pail and get ready to work.
