Pittsburgh Penguins defense prospect Derrick Pouliot had successful shoulder surgery Wednesday and is expected to miss 4-6 months.

The 20-year-old had shoulder labral repair surgery.

Pouliot, the eighth pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, was named the Western Hockey League Defenseman of the Year after helping the Portland Winterhawks advance to the WHL championship series.

Pouliot led WHL defensemen in the playoffs with 32 points (five goals, 27 assists) and had a career-high 70 points (17 goals, 53 assists) during the regular season.

TSN's Bob McKenzie reported via Twitter on Wednesday that Penguins rookie defenseman Olli Maatta will have shoulder surgery Thursday that will sideline him for about four months.

Quote of the Day

I first met him when I was 19 years old and he coached me for 13 consecutive years. I don't know how many athletes who have had that pleasure. Al Arbour was a man that left us not only feeling like champions, but left us with a lot of great memories that we can carry on through life.
