Ovechkin to be 'completely healthy' by camp: Capitals
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin did not sustain any torn ligaments in his right knee when he was injured Sunday while playing for Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Championship.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin did not sustain any torn ligaments in his right knee when he was injured Sunday while playing for Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Championship.

Andrei Safronov, Russia's general manager, told reporters in Belarus on Monday that an MRI showed Ovechkin's injury is not as severe as initially feared.

"He's OK at the moment," Safronov said. "There's some pain, but he's working with the doctors."

The Capitals released this statement on Ovechkin's injury Monday evening:

"Following our review of the available medical reports, Alex Ovechkin sustained a right leg injury during Team Russia's game versus Germany. This type of injury requires rest, but based on the current information provided, we are confident that Alex will be completely healthy prior to the start of training camp. We will continue to monitor his progress and request additional tests and medical information for our review. Once our medical staff receives and reviews that information, we will be able to make a better determination of the injury. We will share information with our fans as it becomes available."

It's expected Ovechkin will miss Russia's next game, Tuesday against host Belarus, on the final day of the preliminary round. Safronov said Ovechkin could return for the quarterfinals, which are Thursday.

"[Ovechkin] will definitely stay with the team," Safronov said. "Even if he couldn't play he'd still be here. He's not just a part of this team, he's a leader."

Ovechkin was injured when he collided with Germany's Marcus Kink during a preliminary-round game. He remained down on ice after the collision before heading to the dressing room unable to put any pressure on his right leg.

Monday, the IIHF suspended Kink for one game for the hit, which they ruled was clipping.

Russia is the only undefeated team in the tournament (6-0, 18 points) and leads Group B. Ovechkin, who is Russia's captain, has three goals and six assists in six games, and his nine points are tied for second-most among all scorers.
