Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin sustained an injury to what appeared to be his right knee while representing Russia in a game against Germany on Sunday at the 2014 IIHF World Championship at Minsk Arena.
Ovechkin took a hit from a Germany's Marcus Kink at the Russian blue line and was down for two minutes before heading to the dressing room without putting any pressure on his right leg.
The 28-year-old led the NHL with 51 goals in 78 games during the regular season.
"We are aware that Alex Ovechkin sustained an injury during today's game vs. Germany," the Capitals said in a statement. "Our medical staff is working with Ovechkin and Team Russia to gather additional information at this time."
