Guelph tops Edmonton in Memorial Cup

Kerby Rychel and Tyler Bertuzzi each scored two goals to lead the Guelph Storm to a 5-2 victory against the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday at the Memorial Cup in London, Ontario.

Rychel, taken by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the 19th pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, opened the scoring via the power play with five seconds remaining in the first period. After Edmonton grabbed a 2-1 lead on goals 27 seconds apart by Henrik Samuelsson and Ashton Sautner early in the second, Rychel tied it at 7:40 with another power-play goal.

Guelph, the Ontario Hockey League champion, went ahead at 14:52 on a goal by Brock McGinn and made it 4-2 when Bertuzzi scored at 5:46 of the third. Bertuzzi, a second-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings in 2013, added an insurance goal with 4:11 remaining.

"I thought we were a little bit nervous at first and weren’t skating as well as we can," Guelph coach Scott Walker said. "I will say I liked the resilience of the bench, we weren’t getting frustrated. We were sticking to the game plan."

The Storm excelled on special teams, going 2-for-3 on the power play and killing off all five advantages for the Oil Kings.

"We gave up two power play goals and we didn't score on the power play, so special teams really let us down," Edmonton coach Derek Laxdal said. "We have to figure that out pretty quick here."

Justin Nichols stopped 37 shots for Guelph, which plays the Val-d'Or Foreurs, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion, on Monday.

Tristan Jarry, a second-round choice by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2013 draft, made 27 saves for Edmonton, the champion of the Western Hockey League. The Oil Kings play again Sunday against the host London Knights, who lost 1-0 to Val-d'Or on Friday in the tournament opener.

"We didn't get a win off the start but we've got to look at the positives," said Edmonton captain Griffin Reinhart, the New York Islanders' first-round pick in 2012. "We proved to ourselves that we can compete at this level."
