The Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Tuesday with a Game 7 loss to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Second Round.

The IIHF website said Malkin will join the Russian team Sunday. It plays Germany that night in a preliminary-round game, and faces Belarus on Tuesday.

It is the sixth World Championship for Malkin, 27. He won gold in 2012, when he was the tournament's most valuable player.

Russia is first in Group B with a record of 4-0 (12 points) in the preliminary round.

Malkin had 14 points in 13 games this NHL postseason after getting 72 in 60 regular-season games.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
