Senators sign defenceman Wikstrand to three-year entry-level contract

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators have signed defenceman Mikael Wikstrand to a three-year entry-level contract.

A native of Karlstad, Sweden, Wikstrand had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 19 games with Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League. He added two points (one goal, one assist) in seven games as Frolunda was defeated in the SHL quarter-finals by Linkopings.

Prior to making his SHL debut, Wikstrand registered 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) with Mora of Sweden's Allsvenskan league.

Wikstrand helped Sweden earn a silver medal at the 2013 world junior hockey championship in Ufa, Russia, registering four assists in six games.

He was selected by Ottawa in the seventh round, 196th overall, of the 2012 NHL draft.

Quote of the Day

He's, believe it or not, actually one of my favorite guys, and I've ended up trading him twice. I appreciate what he's done. He was one year away from being an unrestricted free agent, and I felt with this opportunity, that it was a chance that we were able to get somebody for him in Nick Bonino and Adam Clendening.
