Nashville Predators hire Peter Laviolette, he becomes 2nd head coach in franchise's history

NASHVILE, Tenn. - Peter Laviolette is the new head coach of the Nashville Predators.

The NHL team announced today that Laviolette has signed a multi-year contract.

In October, Laviolette was fired by the Philadelphia Flyers after the team started the season with three straight losses.

Laviolette, who started his NHL head coaching career in 2001 with the New York Islanders, guided the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup win in 2006.

He also led the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup final, where they lost to Chicago.

Laviolette succeeds Barry Trotz, who was fired last month after 15 seasons as head coach of the Predators.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
