Veteran defenseman Poti announces retirement
Defenseman Tom Poti, who played in more than 800 games for four teams during a 14-season NHL career, announced his retirement Thursday.

Defenseman Tom Poti, who played in more than 800 games for four teams during a 14-season NHL career, announced his retirement Thursday.

Poti, 37, last played in the NHL for the Washington Capitals during the 2012-13 season.

"I was very fortunate to play in the National Hockey League for 14 years. It was a dream come true and I had an awesome ride and met so many great people along the way," Poti said in a statement released through the NHL Players' Association. "I'd like to thank my family and my wife and children for all their love and support."

Poti was a third-round selection (No. 59) of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1996 NHL Draft and broke in with the team during the 1998-99 season.

He was traded to the New York Rangers late in the 2001-02 season and was an NHL all-star the following season, posting career highs of 11 goals and 48 points.

Poti went on to play one season with the New York Islanders and five with the Capitals, finishing with 69 goals and 327 points in 824 regular-season games. He had two goals and 19 points in 51 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

A native of Worcester, Mass., Poti won a silver medal for the United States at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
