Avalanche's Barrie injured, out 4-6 weeks
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie left in the second period of Game 3 against the Minnesota Wild with a lower-body injury and did not return.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie sustained a knee injury early in the second period of Game 3 of their Western Conference First Round series against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Monday night.

Barrie and Wild forward Matt Cooke made knee-to-knee contact near the blue line in Colorado's defensive zone. Barrie skated slowly to the Avalanche bench and headed down the tunnel to the dressing room.

Cooke was assessed a two-minute minor for kneeing on the play.

The Avalanche announced during the second intermission that Barrie would not return to the game. Colorado coach Patrick Roy announced after the game that Barrie will miss 4-6 weeks.

Minnesota won the game in overtime, 1-0.

"I think it's the play of the game," Roy said. "We lost our best offensive defenseman. I think it could have been a five-minute major and he'd be out of the game. I think that would have broken their momentum; we would have been on the power play."

Cooke has a history of supplemental discipline with the NHL, but has stayed out of trouble for the past 36 months.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that Cooke has been offered an in-person hearing with details to be determined.

"I'm not working for the League. I'm sure they will make the right call," Roy said. "We're very confident they will make the right call."
