Senators owner Melnyk says MacLean will return
Ottawa Senators coach Paul MacLean will return next season, owner Eugene Melnyk confirmed during a conference call Tuesday.

Ottawa Senators coach Paul MacLean will return next season, owner Eugene Melnyk confirmed during a conference call Tuesday.

"Paul is our coach and he's going to be our coach going into next year," Melnyk said, though he added "changes will need to happen."

One year after making the Stanley Cup Playoffs and eliminating the Montreal Canadiens in a first-round upset, the Senators finished 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 37-31-14 record.

MacLean, who led the Senators to the playoffs in his first season as coach in 2011-12, has a record of 103-79-30.

Questions for the Senators heading into the offseason include the future of captain Jason Spezza and whether they will re-sign forward Ales Hemsky, acquired prior to the NHL Trade Deadline.

"Definitely not a wholesale change," Melnyk said. "We need leadership and accountability from top to bottom."

Quote of the Day

I've got a lot of experience and there's a lot of young guys. It's even making me excited a little more. It's kind of a new life. At my age, I feel like I know a lot of things what to do, but I just cannot do it anymore. It's a lot easier to tell them what to do because they've still got the legs and hands to do it. I just know things, but I cannot do them anymore.
