Bernier, who is scheduled to have the surgery Wednesday, missed the Maple Leafs' final four games of the regular season and nine of the last 14. Toronto ended up losing 12 of its last 14 to drop from third in the Eastern Conference standings to 12th.

The news first was reported by Maple Leafs beat reporter Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 in Toronto.

In his first season as a full-time starter after Toronto acquired him from the Los Angeles Kings, the 25-year-old went 26-19-7 in 55 games, with a 2.68 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage that ranked eighth in the NHL.

Bernier also finished seventh in shots faced (1,787) and saves (1,649). He made at least 40 saves in a game 10 times, including a season-high 48 in a 3-2 overtime win against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 5.
