Martin Brodeur to start Devils' season finale

Goaltender Martin Brodeur will make potentially the last start of his NHL career with the New Jersey Devils on Sunday in the season finale against the Boston Bruins at Prudential Center.

"[Coach Peter DeBoer] asked me if I wanted to play and, to a certain extent, I’ll never say I don’t want to play if I’m healthy enough and feel good enough," Brodeur told Northjersey.com. "So, I’m happy I’m going to be in the net."

Brodeur, 41, can become an unrestricted free agent this summer and has stated his desire to continue playing in 2014-15. He's said he's not sure where that will be.

"I’ll just take everything in," Brodeur said. "I’m going to go out there and try to do my best and enjoy playing the game and have fun out there. It’s kind of hard. I’m just going to go out and play like it’s another game, but definitely knowing in the back of my mind it might be my last one I’m going to play here, any for a while. So, I’ll try to enjoy it as much as I can and, I think, for the team, too, we owe it to the fans, they’ve been really supportive throughout this season, to go out and make a good last impression."

Brodeur told the website he has friends and family members coming in Sunday in case it's his last game for the Devils.

Brodeur is 18-14-6 this season in 38 starts but has been outplayed by Cory Schneider, who was acquired during the 2013 NHL Draft to eventually replace him. Brodeur is the NHL's all-time leader in wins, shutouts and games played, and has helped the Devils win the Stanley Cup three times in 21 seasons.

After reaching the postseason in 16 of Brodeur's first 17 seasons in which he played at least one game, the Devils missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in four seasons in 2013-14.

"Last game of the year, it’s kind of nice to get the start and go from there," Brodeur said. "Try to get one good last game before we finish the season."
