WHL Roundup: Winterhawks turn up the offence against the Royals to take Game 1

PORTLAND, Ore. - Mathew Dumba and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had two goals and an assist and Nicolas Petan scored once and set up three more as the Portland Winterhawks crushed the visiting Victoria Royals 8-2 on Friday in Western Hockey League playoff action.

Brendan Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot had a goal and two assists apiece for the Winterhawks, who lead the second-round series 1-0, and Chase De Leo added a single goal.

Brandon Magee and Taylor Crunk supplied the scoring for the Royals.

Portland's Brendan Burke made 25 saves for the win. Patrik Polivka started in net for Victoria but was pulled at 3:11 of the second period after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Coleman Vollrath stopped 18-of-23 shots in 37 minutes of relief.

The Winterhawks went 3-for-7 on the power play while the Royals scored once on six chances with the man advantage.

Victoria's Brett Cote received a major and game misconduct for a slashing incident at 11:04 of the third period.

Quote of the Day

I downplayed the first one because I thought it's just a hockey game. We just want to win the game; it's against our rival and we want the two points. I downplayed it, but now having gone through the first one I look back and say, 'Geez, that was really cool.' I think as I've grown a bit older I've got a lot more appreciation for what we're allowed to do every day.
