Barrie ties the game late, scores shootout winner as the Avalanche beat the Rangers 3-2

DENVER - Tyson Barrie scored in the final minute of regulation, and then scored again in the shootout, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night.

Semyon Varlamov had 29 saves for Colorado, which has won five in a row. Varlamov also stopped each of New York's attempts in the shootout.

The Avalanche maintained a three-point lead on the Chicago Blackhawks for second place in the Central Division. The Blackhawks beat Minnesota in a shootout but still lag behind Colorado with 10 days left in the season.

Henrik Lundqvist had 35 saves for the Rangers, who gained a point on Philadelphia despite the loss. The Flyers lost to Columbus on Thursday.

New York has a four-point lead for second in the Metropolitan Division.

Quote of the Day

There's no discouragement in that room. There's no issues there at all to be honest with you. It's more about, 'Hey, it's opportunities for players.' And if we become that bad of a team because of one player, it's not a real good sign for our hockey club. So this is part of sports. It's part of hockey.
