ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sam Carrick's goal at 14:22 of the third period stood up as the winner as the Toronto Marlies doubled up the host Rochester Americans 4-2 on Friday in American Hockey Legaue action.
Carter Ashton and Brad Staubitz also scored for the Marlies (40-20-5), who now have a 15-point lead over second-place Rochester for top spot in the Noth Division standings, while Trevor Smith secured the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation.
Joel Armia and Brayden Irwin supplied the scoring for the Americans (30-27-10), who have dropped nine games straight.
Toronto's Drew MacIntyre made 22 saves for the win as Rochester's Andrey Makorov stopped 27-of-30 shots in a losing cause.
Life's about opportunity and how you respond to that opportunity, and obviously he must have some swagger about him, some confidence about him, because he was solid. He made some good saves. He was 6-foot-3 on every shot, which is a good thing for a goalie. He played well. We got a win.
