Clinching scenarios: No team can secure berth tonight
No NHL teams can clinch Stanley Cup Playoffs berths tonight

There are no clinching scenarios for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in games being played Wednesday.

The Anaheim Ducks clinched a spot in the playoffs Tuesday without playing a game. The Ducks were assured of a Western Conference berth when the Dallas Stars lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks also have qualified from the Western Conference. The Boston Bruins have qualified from the Eastern Conference.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs consist of 16 teams, eight from each conference. The top three teams in each division make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots are filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference -- regardless of division -- based on regular-season points. It is possible for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.

— Bryan Trottier on making his return to coaching as an assistant with the Sabres
