The Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday signed defenseman Eric Knodel to a one-year, entry-level contract for the 2014-15 season. Financial terms of the contract were not released.
Knodel also signed a professional tryout agreement to spend the rest of the 2013-14 season with the Maple Leafs' American Hockey League team, the Toronto Marlies. The Maple Leafs drafted Knodel in the fifth round (No. 128) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
The 23-year-old had seven goals, 21 assists and a plus-16 rating in 41 games with the University of New Hampshire this season. In three collegiate seasons the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Knodel had 61 points in 116 games.
Obviously a lot happened in a short period of time. At the end of the day, considering everything I went through, I really felt close to my teammates and I really feel like what we accomplished, I know we didn't win it all. ... I'm really proud of how we got there and what we did once we got there.
