PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday signed rookie forward Michael Raffl to a two-year, $2.2 million contract extension.

Raffl, who signed a one-year, $925,000 contract May 31, 2013, could have become a restricted free agent this summer.

The 25-year-old has nine goals and 21 points in 57 games. He's developed into one of the Flyers' most versatile performers and a top penalty killer, averaging 1:44 per game, fourth-most among their forwards. He has 91 hits, fifth among forwards, and 37 blocked shots, tied for third among forwards.

Raffl had three points in four games for Austria at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Quote of the Day

It was a big dream. [Messi] is probably the best athlete out there, so it's a big honor, for [Kuznetzov] as well. It's maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the best player in soccer right now. I'm a big Barcelona fan and Messi fan, so it's huge. You can take [Michael] Jordan, [Mark] Messier, [Wayne] Gretzky, those kinds of [people]. It's an honor to meet. It's nice to be in that position.
