NHL suspends Columbus forward Comeau for two games for boarding Detroit's Smith

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NHL has suspended Columbus Blue Jackets forward Blake Comeau for two games for hitting Detroit defenceman Brendan Smith from behind.

The incident took place at 12:47 of the first period of The Blue Jackets' 4-3 win over the Red Wings in Columbus on Tuesday. Comeau hit Smith into the boards as the defenceman skated into the Detroit zone to retrieve a loose puck in the corner.

Comeau was assessed a minor penalty for boarding on the play.

Comeau will forfeit US$10,256.42 in salary. He is eligible to return when Columbus hosts Carolina on Tuesday.

Quote of the Day

That's a really tough thing to play through; when you finally are thrown out there, the game is fast, intense, every single play matters, you've got to find a way to play through that and make smart plays. So it's a huge testament to [Vermette] and some other individuals in our locker room that are putting their own ego, their own wants and needs aside, and are ready for those opportunities when they do come.
