The Calgary Flames issued a statement Sunday that center Matt Stajan is taking a leave of absence to mourn the death of his newborn son, Emerson.
"It is with great sadness we inform that Katie and Matt Stajan are grieving the loss of their son, Emerson Stajan," the Flames announced. "Emerson passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, following childbirth.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Katie and Matt at this difficult time. We appreciate that everyone has and will continue to respect their privacy during this period."
A private memorial service will take place for Emerson in the coming days.
Stajan has not played since March 1. He has missed the past four games.
Life's about opportunity and how you respond to that opportunity, and obviously he must have some swagger about him, some confidence about him, because he was solid. He made some good saves. He was 6-foot-3 on every shot, which is a good thing for a goalie. He played well. We got a win.
