Defenseman Slater Koekkoek, taken by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 10th pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, will miss the rest of the season due to a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Koekkoek, who plays for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, was injured Thursday in a fight during a game against the Saginaw Spirit.
Windsor owner Warren Rychel told NHL.com that Koekkoek would be meeting with Lightning team doctors to evaluate his condition.
This marks the third straight season Koekkoek has ended because of a shoulder injury. The previous two seasons Koekkoek needed an operation on his left shoulder; the injury sustained Thursday is to his right shoulder and likely will require another operation.
In 62 games this season, Koekkoek has 15 goals, 53 points and a plus-44 rating. He's tied for third among OHL defensemen in goals and is third in points. He's tied for fifth among all players in plus/minus rating.
