Columbus Blue Jackets acquire D Nick Schultz from Edmonton Oilers for fifth-round pick

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Blue Jackets, in dire need of immediate help on the blue line, have traded a fifth-round draft pick to the Edmonton Oilers for veteran defenceman Nick Schultz.

The 31-year-old Schultz has no goals and four assists in 60 games this season, his third with the Oilers after spending most of his 13-year career in Minnesota.

Two of the Blue Jackets' top defencemen are sidelined. Fedor Tyutin injured an ankle while playing for Russia in the Olympics and is out for another week or two and prized rookie Ryan Murray (lower body) is day to day.

It was the second big deal of the day for the Blue Jackets, who also dealt forward Marian Gaborik to the Los Angeles Kings for two conditional draft picks.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
