Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee told reporters Thursday that the father of Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has undergone heart surgery, which could delay Ovechkin's return to Washington.
McPhee said Mikhail Ovechkin suffered what is believed to be a heart attack and underwent surgery, but is in stable condition.
Following Russia's elimination in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Ovechkin was expected to return to Washington this week to resume practicing with teammates. McPhee said he isn't sure when Ovechkin will return to the team.
Ovechkin leads the NHL with 40 goals, and the Capitals are one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington's next game is Feb. 27 against the Florida Panthers.
