IceCaps topple Pirates 7-5 on strength of Andrew Cooper's four-point night

LEWISTON, Maine - Andrew Gordon scored two goals and assisted on two more as the St. John's IceCaps held on to beat the Portland Pirates 7-5 in American Hockey League action on Tuesday.

John Albert had two goals and an assist, Kyle MacKinnon had a goal and an assist apiece, and Brenden Kichton and Eric O'Dell also scored for St. John's (29-19-4), who led 7-3 heading into the third period.

Lucas Lessio had two goals and an assist for Portland (19-22-9), Rotislav Klesla scored a goal and assisted on another, and Andy Miele and Brett Hextall also scored.

IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson stopped 24 shots for the victory.

Mark Visentin started in net for the Pirates but was replaced after giving up seven goals on 37 shots through 39:44. Louis Domingue stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.

Portland got on the board first with Klesla's second of the season at 9:00 of the first period, but St. John's responded with three straight goals — including two within the first minute and a half of the second period — to go up 3-1.

The Pirates replied with a power-play goal from Miele at 2:35 of the second, and the IceCaps kept the pressue going with four more goals before the end of the middle frame, including a short-handed marker from Albert.

Portland scored two in the third period.

The IceCaps outshot the Pirates 49-29.
