Selanne leaves Finland game with 'small' injury
Finland forward Teemu Selanne was not on the bench for the start of the second period Thursday against Austria.

SOCHI -- Finland forward Teemu Selanne missed the final two periods of an 8-4 win against Austria in Group B play Thursday afternoon at Bolshoy Ice Dome.

Selanne appeared to injure his neck, but the team termed it an upper-body injury.

Finland coach Erkka Westerlund said he expects Selanne to be available Friday when the Finns play Norway (Noon ET, MSNBC, SNET).

"It's a small upper-body injury," Westerlund said. "It's not serious."

Finland defenseman Kimmo Timonen said he expects Selanne to be OK.

"He should be fine," Timonen said. "I talked to him during second period and he looked better. Hopefully he can play."

Selanne, Finland's captain, received some attention from a trainer on his head/neck area during the first period and did not return for the second. The Anaheim Ducks forward had an assist on Finland's first goal.

Selanne had eight shifts in first period for 5:27 of ice time, fourth among Finnish forwards, was plus-1, and assisted on a goal by Mikael Granlund which tied the game 1-1.

Selanne, 43, has said he will retire from the NHL after this season. He is playing in his sixth Olympics.
