New York Islanders center Frans Nielsen sustained a broken hand by a slash by Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson during their game Saturday, according to a report by Arthur Staple of Newsday.

Johnson received a two-game suspension Tuesday from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

Nielsen has 18 goals and 43 points in 60 games this season. The Islanders' first game after the Olympic break is Feb. 27 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Once again, it shows character in this dressing room. Once again, there's no quitting in here. We all wanted this so bad and we worked so hard to get home-ice advantage and we weren't going to let this one slide.
