Ankle injury sidelines Wild centre Mikko Koivu for Sochi Winter Games

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota Wild centre Mikko Koivu decided his surgically repaired right ankle has not healed enough to allow him to play for Finland in the Olympics.

Koivu, who had surgery after fracturing his right ankle while blocking a shot on Jan. 4, has been out the past 15 games for Minnesota heading into the Olympic beak.

Koivu, a two-time Olympian, was one of the most experienced players and a possible captain for Finland, which won the bronze medal in the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

A captain for the Wild, Koivu has eight goals and 27 assists in 44 games this season.

Quote of the Day

We're buyers. We're committed to winning. That's what [owner Vinnie Viola] has said all along and what we've said all along. We want to win. We want to win a championship. We're putting the pieces together, step by step, and we're hopeful that Jaromir can lead these young guys to the promised land. It's a win-win for us.
