Jets defenceman grant Clitsome out for season after back surgery in U.S.

WINNIPEG - Defenceman Grant Clitsome is out for the season after back surgery in California, the Winnipeg Jets said Friday.

Clitsome, 28, hasn't played since Dec. 17 in Buffalo.

The native of Gloucester, Ont., has 12 points in 32 games this season. He was claimed off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets in February 2012 by the Jets.

The team didn't disclose the nature of the injury but said he had an operation at the Marina Spine Center in Marina del Rey, performed by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, Sr.

Watkins is billed as having treated more professional athletes with spinal injuries than any other surgeon in the world.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
