ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Edmonton Oilers forward Nail Yakupov sustained a head injury late in the second period against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night and the team said he will not return to the game.

Yakupov appeared to sustain the injury with just over a minute remaining in the middle period when he was checked off the puck by Wild forward Matt Cooke. Yakupov hit the ice hard and slid into awkwardly into the boards near the Edmonton bench.

Minnesota scored on the ensuing rush, giving the Wild a 3-1 lead.

Yakupov, the first player taken in the 2012 NHL Draft, has nine goals and eight assists in 47 games this season but was held off the scoresheet through 40 minutes Thursday. He was a minus-1 on the night and his minus-31 rating for the season is the worst in the NHL.

Quote of the Day

I mean, hockey had to change the rules because of Marty, and that's impressive. I got two Stanley Cup rings because of the guy. Look at the banners of [Scott Niedermayer, Scott Stevens and Ken Daneyko] and Marty is right up there when you think about the New Jersey Devils; he was part of the core group and he'll go down as one of the greatest goalies ever.
