Sharks mourn passing of scout Jack Gardiner
Long-time San Jose Sharks scout Jack Gardiner died Sunday

Longtime San Jose Sharks scout Jack Gardiner died Sunday following a long battle with cancer.

Gardner was a professional hockey scout for nearly 35 years with the Sharks, St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs. He had worked with the Sharks' scouting department since 2004, where his primary focus was the eastern United States.

"Jack will be sorely missed by everyone who crossed paths with him over his many years working in the National Hockey League," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "He had a true love of the game of hockey and his family will be in our thoughts and prayers."

Gardiner also worked for the NHL at the Central Scouting Bureau, where he ranked and rated all amateur players for the NHL draft.

"Jack was a real hockey person and loved being at the rink," Sharks director of scouting Tim Burke said. "He was a friend to everyone and had a real good eye for identifying talent. Everyone who met Jack enjoyed being around him and our scouting crew is better for having worked with him."
