Daily Primer Jan. 12: Ducks seek seventh straight win

Can the Detroit Red Wings put an end to the Anaheim Ducks' remarkable run at Honda Center on Sunday night?

Anaheim, the only team that has yet to lose in regulation on home ice this season (18-0-2), became the seventh team in NHL history to win 16-plus games in a 17-game stretch (16-1-0) with a 5-3 win against the host Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.

The Ducks return home to face the Red Wings (8 p.m. ET, FS-D, PRIME), who could be without Daniel Alfredsson (back spasms), Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Johan Franzen (head), Darren Helm (groin), Jonathan Ericsson (broken ribs), Stephen Weiss (hernia) and Jonas Gustavsson (groin).

Here's a closer look at the action Sunday:

Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals -- Sabres top scorer Cody Hodgson and forward Ville Leino returned from injury to practice Saturday and are expected to play. Hodgson (upper body) has not played since Dec. 19 (eight games), but leads the team with 19 points and is tied for the lead with eight goals. Leino, who is still searching for his first goal this season, missed three games with a lower-body injury. The Capitals were 0-5 in one-goal games decided in regulation before defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 Thursday and the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Friday. Philipp Grubauer likely will be back in goal after Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth started the past two.

New York Islanders at Dallas Stars -- The surging Islanders won their sixth straight road game when Michael Grabner beat Semyon Varlamov in overtime for a 2-1 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. New York will play the third of a six-game road trip against the Stars, whom they beat by a 7-3 score last Monday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Dallas has lost five games in a row and has been outscored 22-10. It's the Stars' longest losing streak since they dropped six consecutive games in March 2011.

New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs -- The Devils open a four-game road trip after Marek Zidlicky's goal with 2.1 seconds left in overtime lifted them to a 2-1 win against the Florida Panthers at Prudential Center on Saturday. Cory Schneider, who made 29 saves, will start a third consecutive game for the second time this season. Toronto will try to put an end to its four-game losing streak; the skid continued with a 3-2 defeat against the Washington Capitals on Friday. The Maple Leafs are 11-16-5 since Oct. 31 and have fallen from first to 10th in the Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers -- Philadelphia visits Madison Square Garden for the first time this season one day after its 10-game home winning streak ended with a 6-3 loss to the Lightning. The Rangers improved to 21-14-3 since a 2-6-0 start with a 3-2 win against the Stars on Friday. Sunday marks the second of a four-game homestand for New York, which has power-play goals in four straight games and is 5-for-13 in that stretch.

Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks -- Edmonton arrives in the Windy City in good spirits after earning a 4-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rexall Place on Friday. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime. The Blackhawks are trying to get out a funk that has seen them win twice in the past seven games, although they've earned points in six of them (2-1-4).

Minnesota Wild at Nashville Predators -- Minnesota had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 4-2 loss to the Avalanche at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday. Charlie Coyle scored twice in 40 seconds late in the second period to erase a 2-0 deficit, but Ryan O'Reilly scored midway through the third to put Colorado back in front to stay. Nashville will play the fourth of a five-game homestand. The Predators suffered their second straight loss Saturday in a 2-1 shootout defeat against the Ottawa Senators.

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks -- The Red Wings make the quick trip down the freeway after an impressive 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday at Staples Center. Detroit was missing several key players, including forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Daniel Alfredsson. Anaheim has won six in a row and 16 of its past 17 games, including a 5-3 victory against the Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday.
