The Capitals had claimed Urbom off waivers from the Devils before the start of the 2013-14 season, and he had one goal and one assist in 20 games with Washington. He hadn't played an NHL game since Nov. 29.
Urbom, a third-round pick (No. 73) of the Devils in the 2009 NHL Draft, had two goals in 14 games over parts of three seasons with New Jersey.
Because the Devils were the only team to put in a claim in Urbom, he can be assigned to the American Hockey League without having to clear waivers again, and general manager Lou Lamoriello said he will be sent to Albany.
The Devils also placed center Jacob Josefson (illness) on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 4.
