Sabres promote Cunneyworth to newly created special assistant role with AHL affiliate

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Randy Cunneyworth will once again be grooming Buffalo Sabres prospects in a new role with the team's American Hockey League affiliate.

Cunneyworth was promoted to the newly created job of special assistant/player development coach of the Rochester Americans, the Sabres announced Wednesday. His responsibilities will include developing players and serving as a liaison with the Sabres.

Cunneyworth spent eight seasons coaching the Americans, from 2000-'08, before making the jump to the NHL. He spent two seasons as an assistant with the Atlanta Thrashers. Cunneyworth then left for Montreal, where he finished the 2011-12 season as the Canadiens interim head coach after Jacques Martin was fired.

The Sabres hired Cunneyworth as a scout in November.
